Berkeley sits on the east shore of the bay, immediately north of Oakland, on a grid that climbs from the waterfront into the hills. That shape produces trips that are brief on the map and awkward on the ground.
Most Berkeley trips are short. Two miles from a house in the Claremont hills to a table in Elmwood. A mile and a half from the Gourmet Ghetto down to the Arts District. Fifteen minutes from Fourth Street out to the Marina.
